Louis Kalff – Bijou – Table Lamp – Philips – 1960s

Design: Louis Kalff designed the Bijou table lamp for Philips in the Netherlands. The model name means “jewel” in French, which suits its compact, sculptural form. Kalff created the design in the 1950s, while this listing identifies the vintage lamp as a 1960s piece.

Materials and colour: The aluminium shade, stem and stand carry a matt green lacquer. Inside, the shade has a light-coloured surface that helps reflect the light. In addition, a warm gold or bronze-coloured base adds contrast. Together, these details give the Louis Kalff Bijou lamp a distinctive look while keeping its compact form.

Design context: Kalff also worked as an architect. For example, he designed the Evoluon exhibition centre in Eindhoven, which Philips completed in 1966. The lamp and building both show a sculptural approach to design. However, we have not confirmed a direct link between the Bijou lamp and the Evoluon’s shape.
