IKEA – Mina (Sputnik) – Coat Rack – Osvaldo Borsani Style – 1994

This set of two IKEA Mina coat racks dates from 1994. Their colourful atomic shapes and radiating forms create a playful Space Age silhouette, reminiscent of a Sputnik satellite. Made from metal and wood, the pair adds a strong graphic accent to an entryway, bedroom or dressing area.

IKEA Mina Sputnik coat racks

The Mina coat racks use a compact central form with projecting elements for hanging coats and accessories. As a result, they offer practical storage while also functioning as colourful wall objects. The design works especially well with 1980s and 1990s interiors, but it can also add a lively contrast to a calmer modern hallway.

Each rack is small enough to place beside a door or in a bedroom. Together, the two pieces can be installed next to one another or used in separate rooms. In addition, the metal and wood construction gives the colourful forms a clear material contrast.

Correct designer attribution

The name Osvaldo Borsani is often associated with these coat racks because of their Italian Space Age appearance. However, IKEA sold this design under the name Mina in 1994. We therefore describe it as an IKEA Mina coat rack in an Osvaldo Borsani style, not as a design by Borsani. This distinction keeps the product information accurate.
