Vitra – Ravioli Chair – Greg Lynn – 2005

This rare chair is called Ravioli and is designed by Greg Lynn. Vitra launched the chair in 2005. Only 500 of these chairs were made and came in different colours. Greg Lynn is one of the pioneers of parametric design, meaning he designs buildings and objects with the aid of digital, algorithmic design tools.

His aim with this piece was to create a lounge chair from as few elements as possible: a stiff base shell from glass fibre reinforced polyester and a soft seat from polyurethane foam. Sculpturally curved elements form the legs beneath the base and the back- and armrests above it.

With its nearly square footprint, it was conceived as one element of a seating landscape, to be combined with stools and tables. The latter, however, were never realized. Lynn’s original plan to alternate the digitally designed patterns of the cover from one chair to the next turned out to be too complex for serial production.
