Louis Kalff – Decora – Z Lamp – Brass socket – Philips – 1950s

This vintage Philips Decora desk lamp, attributed to Louis Kalff and commonly dated to 1956, is also known as the Z lamp. Its curved shade has elongated slots, while a sculptural brass foot supports the angled stem. This example includes a light bulb and shows visible signs of age, including wear to the shade and a dent in the brass base.

Philips Decora Z lamp design

The Decora combines practical task lighting with the streamlined modern design associated with Philips in the 1950s. Its curved metal shade directs light downward, while the elongated openings add a distinctive graphic detail. In addition, the brass foot gives the lamp a warm contrast and a stable base.

The model is sometimes described as a Z lamp because of its profile; Decora is the model name used in this listing. Louis Kalff is commonly credited with the design. The angled stem and curved shade give the lamp a clear silhouette on a desk, side table or shelf.
