IKEA – Rappen – Ted Net Chair – Yellow – Niels Gammelgaard – 1976

This striking set of three vintage folding chairs was designed by Niels Gammelgaard for IKEA. The wire-mesh chairs are commonly called TED or Ted Net, and vintage listings also use the name Rappen. Their bright yellow lacquered metal frames, curved grid backrests and clean industrial lines create an unmistakable late-1970s to 1980s IKEA look.

The folding construction makes the chairs practical for dining, a studio or additional seating when guests arrive. At the same time, the open mesh back keeps the design visually light. The strong yellow finish adds a clear colour accent, while the curved backrest gives the otherwise industrial form a more comfortable appearance.

The TED design has an important place in IKEA’s history. According to the IKEA Museum, Niels Gammelgaard designed TED, introduced it in the 1979 catalogue after development in 1978 and achieved major success. Vintage dealers often use TED, Ted Net and Rappen interchangeably for these mesh folding versions. Therefore, the names in this listing help collectors find the model across different references.
