IKEA – Rappen – Ted Net Chair – Green – Niels Gammelgaard – 1980

A vibrant pair of vintage TED / Ted Net folding chairs designed by Niels Gammelgaard for IKEA. With their bright green lacquered metal frame, wire-grid seat and curved mesh backrest, these chairs have that unmistakable late 1970s to 1980s postmodern IKEA look: light, practical and visually strong. TED was developed in 1978, launched in the 1979 IKEA catalogue, and became one of Gammelgaard’s best-known designs for the company.

The design is simple but very effective. The folded construction made TED both affordable and easy to store, while the deeper curve in the backrest gave it better comfort than many other folding chairs on the market at the time. IKEA Museum notes that IKEA sold 1.2 million of them in the first year alone, which says a lot about how successful the model was.
