IKEA – Kräsen – Original Packaging – Candle Holders – Ehlen Johansson – 1987

These IKEA Krasen candle holders by Ehlén Johansson combine natural stone with playful metal shapes. Introduced in 1987, KRÄSEN brings together dolerite bases, iron wire stems and brass candle cups. This set includes its original packaging. The contrasting materials give the candle holders a distinctive sculptural presence.

Johansson developed three different candlesticks for the collection. Each combines a solid stone base with a slender, expressive stem. As a result, the set balances visual weight with a light outline. The curving wire also gives it a playful character associated with 1980s design.

KRÄSEN formed part of the IKEA Tomorrow programme, which explored modern and experimental ideas. Moreover, the design shows how familiar materials can create an unexpected object. The dark stone contrasts with the warm brass, while the iron wire connects the two. Together, they form a small display with interest from several angles.

Materials and design details

Dolerite is a dark stone found in southern Sweden. Johansson began the project using surplus stone from a local stonemasonry. However, the final design does more than showcase the material. Its combination of different textures and shapes gives each candlestick a clear role within the group.
