IKEA – Kavat – Shelving unit – Tord Björklund – Louise Treschow – 1980s

This striking vintage IKEA Kavat shelving unit is built from three long shelves on a black lacquered metal frame with a strong V-shaped construction. The design looks light despite its generous width, yet the architectural frame gives it a clear presence in a room. Its combination of practical storage and graphic structure makes it stand out from more standard late-20th-century IKEA furniture.

The three laminated shelves provide open space for books, ceramics, lighting or a collection of vintage objects. Meanwhile, the V-shaped frame keeps the composition visually clear and adds an interesting rhythm from side view. Because the shelves remain open, the unit can divide a room without blocking light completely.

The black frame works with natural wood, colourful objects and neutral interiors. In addition, the generous width makes the Kavat useful along a living-room wall, in a studio or as display storage in a shop. The simple Scandinavian approach leaves the contents visible, while the frame supplies the decorative outline.
