IKEA – Jarpen – Bench – White – Niels Gammelgaard – 1983

IKEA Jarpen white bench by Niels Gammelgaard

This IKEA Jarpen white bench combines an open steel mesh structure with a simple, modern outline. Niels Gammelgaard designed the Jarpen series for IKEA in the early 1980s. This listing identifies the design with 1983, placing it within that period of the brand’s furniture collection.

The white finish gives the bench a light appearance. In addition, the mesh allows the surrounding room to remain visible through the structure. It is an interesting choice for a living area, a spacious hallway or a collection of vintage Scandinavian furniture.

Open structure and interior placement

The IKEA Jarpen white bench measures 135 cm across, offering a wider seating format than a single lounge chair. Its powder-coated steel mesh creates a consistent surface across the frame. Meanwhile, the open construction gives the shape definition without a heavy upholstered outline.

For example, place the bench against a plain wall to make the mesh pattern visible. Alternatively, use it as part of a larger seating arrangement. The white finish can blend with pale interiors or stand out against darker walls and floors.

Before ordering, measure the intended position carefully. The bench is 60 cm deep, so leave enough space in front for access. Also consider the 38 cm seat height when planning how you will use it. If you add a loose cushion, choose one that fits without hiding the distinctive structure.
